A mere one hundred days or so from the World Cup kick-off and the French squad is putting the finishing touches to its arsenal. France has never won or even reached the final of this international encounter, and dreams of brandishing that trophy. But does it really have the fire-power worthy of its ambitions? A look at the line-up.

n 1938, at its first World Cup in front of a home crowd, the French tricolore squad made it through to the quarter-finals of the competition, only to be beaten 3-1 by Italy. Sixty years on and soccer has lost none of its appeal; indeed, it remains the country's No.1 sport. It brings together millions of enthusiasts across the entire social spectrum. France is now hosting the 16th World Cup and intends to make the most of the occasion so that, for the very first time, it can hold soccer's most prestigious trophy up high.

Youri Djorkaeff.

Unfortunately, the thirty-one other teams that have qualified for the final phase (a record for any World Cup) have not come to France to be mere onlookers. Each and every one of them hopes to take over from Brazil, the current title holder. And yet the French team has sufficiently powerful assets to its game to stand in the path of its adversaries.

One of the main advantages the French team has under its manager Aimé Jacquet is its status as the host nation. And yet the statistics are not very encouraging. Ever since the World Cup was first created, only five organising nations have succeeded in winning the title at home: Uruguay in 1930, Italy in 1934, England in 1966, Germany in 1974 and Argentina in 1978. However, it has to be said that the countries hosting the event have often been of « lesser importance ». The big footballing nations have therefore every right to take comfort in the thought that a World Cup organised « at home » is relatively easier to win.

But above all it's Euro 84, which was won by « Michel Platini's gang », that leads most punters to believe that the tricolores will have a say in what happens on the pitch in the summer of 1998. Indeed, the European Championship fourteen years ago remains the only title ever won by the French players. And, strangely enough, it took place in France. Was it due to the public, totally dedicated to their cause, or the fact that the matches were played at football grounds they were familiar with? In any case, France put on a display of attractive and attacking football.

Players in good hands

Another reason for satisfaction is the number of French soccer stars playing for either Italian or Spanish sides. Indeed, that gives them the opportunity to measure up against the elite of international players, as they have all qualified for the World Cup and are very much present in both teams. Take the strikers, for instance: there's Nicolas Ouédec playing for Barcelona's Espanyol and Youri Djorkaeff, sidekick to Brazil's Ronaldo and Argentina's Diego Simeone at Inter de Milan, of whom the former international defender Patrick Battiston praises « the goal-scoring instinct and devilish skill ».

Then there's the midfield: Zinedine Zidane and Didier Deschamps at Juventus de Turin; Ibrahim Ba, teammate of Brazil's Leonardo and Germany's Christian Ziege; and Christian Karembeu, who at Real Madrid is surrounded by a plethora of great players such as Spain's Raùl Gonzàlez Blanco, Argentina's Carlos Redondo, Croatia's Davor Suker, Brazil's Roberto Carlos and Holland's Clarence Seedorf.

What's more, there's a handful of players on the French team who play regularly in the French league and are also in the thick of it after qualifying for the European Cup. There's the Monaco players, with goalkeeper Fabien Barthez and forwards Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, who are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. They have already played Manchester United (March 4 and 18, 1998), another source for international talent from all over Europe, with the likes of Norway's Ole-Gunnar Solskjear, Scotland's Brian McClair, England's David Beckham and Denmark's Peter Schmeichel, who will in fact come up against France in the very first round of the World Cup.

Likewise, Auxerre's forward Stéphane Guivarc'h, recently capped striker for the French side and scheduled to play Lazio in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, will be able to size up Yugoslavia's Vladimir Jugovic, Croatia's Alen Boksic and Argentina's Matias Almeyda.

Robert Pires.

But although France is holding some good cards, it also has a few headaches. France has not played a single decisive match since its defeat against the Czech Republic in the Euro 96 semi-finals in England. And while its status as host country means that France qualifies as of right - after failing to reach the final round of the World Cup in Italy in 1990 and the United States in 1994 -, it also means it seriously lacks competitive matches.

There is also another, far more worrying aspect that casts a shadow over the French team's prospects: the absence of a goalscorer. Since September 7, 1996, the first match of the qualifiers for the 1996 European Championships, France has played a total of 34 matches at all levels (prior to France v Spain on January 28, 1998, at the Stade de France). While the figures with 22 wins, 9 draws and 3 defeats, with 13 goals against, are impressive enough, the manner has often left a lot to be desired.

True, it is not the number of goals scored (59) that betrays the instability of the French attack but the worrying number of different scorers (26). The many experiments conducted by manager Aimé Jacquet within his strike force are ample proof. These various line-ups did not succeed in bringing forward the sure-fire striker capable of turning a match around. Apart from Youri Djorkaeff, who has scored 13 goals over that period, French goal scorers have not been falling over themselves to emerge as star strikers. Stéphane Guivarc'h, the French League's top scorer in 1997 and on his way to doubling the stakes this season, could well be the man of the moment.

Patrick Battiston, who has played at three World Cups, describes him as « a fearsome striker who has gained a lot in maturity. What's more, he's not a calculating player, in other words he never spares himself. With his physique and skills, he forces defenders to be on their toes at all times".

So the French team only has a few friendlies left for everything to fall into place before setting off for the most important sporting event of the turn of the century. After that, it will have another four-year wait before attempting once again to get its hands on that trophy. Providing it qualifies...
